Job description :

Located in Saint-Hyacinthe, our client has an analytical laboratory equipped with state-of-the-art instrumentation and conducts its research on a site entirely dedicated to innovation and experimentation. The multidisciplinary team shares best practices, promotes its products, and is committed to supporting innovation in a sustainable and collaborative approach.

We are currently looking for a dynamic individual to fill the position of Director of Scientific Operations.

Reporting to senior management, the incumbent will be responsible for the smooth running of scientific activities, overseeing and managing research projects, technology transfer, and analytical laboratory operations.

He or she will ensure the quality, consistency, and efficiency of the work carried out, while supporting the implementation of the organization's strategic directions.

He or she will also be responsible for ensuring that allocated budgets and project timelines are rigorously followed and respected, thus guaranteeing optimal management of financial and time resources.

The director will also contribute to identifying and mobilizing human and financial resources, exploring traditional and alternative sources, in order to ensure the sustainability of operations.

He or she will regularly present key files to senior management and, on occasion, to the board of directors.

Daily operations, budget, and order book :

  • Work with senior management and the CFO to develop the annual budget for R&D, technology transfer, and the laboratory, and monitor it within the departments.
  • Plan, coordinate, manage, and monitor the portfolio of R&D, technology transfer, and laboratory projects, ensuring that deadlines and deliverables are met while responding to strategic planning priorities and corporate objectives.
  • Work closely with researchers and project managers to support the advancement of scientific initiatives.
  • Identify and target grant programs and other funding opportunities to diversify revenue streams and support the growth of scientific activities.
  • Ensure the maintenance, development, and renewal of scientific infrastructure and equipment.
  • Coordinate the application of intellectual property policy within the R&D department.
  • Oversee purchasing and contracts in accordance with internal policies.

Analytical laboratory :

  • Oversee analytical laboratory operations and ensure compliance with quality standards and practices.
  • Implement and lead the ISO 17025 accreditation project for the laboratory, in collaboration with stakeholders.
  • Contribute to the continuous improvement of processes and the achievement of strategic objectives.
  • Manage the instrument pool and equipment to ensure their availability, maintenance, and replacement as needed.

Team management and efficient collaboration :

  • Organize the R&D, technology transfer, and analytical laboratory departments, and structure internal communication between the three units.
  • Summarize department activities by gathering relevant information and sharing it with senior management during weekly meetings or, if needed, with the board of directors.
  • Take charge of human resources management for the three departments: workforce planning, absence management (vacations, sick leave, etc.), coaching, skills development, and participation in the evaluation process.
  • Work closely with other departments to ensure optimal alignment of projects.

Skills and qualifications :

Required profile :

  • Bachelor's degree in agronomy, chemistry, chemical engineering, or another relevant discipline or training.
  • Minimum of 10 years of experience in research and development and/or analytical laboratories, including at least 4 years in a management position.
  • NPDP (New Product Development Professional) or PMP (Project Management Professional) training is an asset.

Knowledge :

  • Excellent command of French and English, both spoken and written.
  • Excellent knowledge of project management.
  • Significant experience in managing scientific or technical teams, including the coordination of multidisciplinary projects.
  • Solid understanding of applied research and/or regulated laboratory environments.
  • Experience in managing or implementing a quality system, ideally ISO 17025.
  • Valid Class 5 driver's license.

  • Ability to juggle multiple priorities, work collaboratively, and make informed decisions in a constantly changing environment.
