Job description :
The Compliance Associate will participate in the maintenance, conceptualization, development and implementation of our client's preventive food control plan. He/she will keep abreast of all legislation relating to food safety issues in Canada, anticipate developments and recommend appropriate measures. The incumbent will participate in the management of food safety throughout the product life cycle, ensuring compliance and adherence to government requirements. This role also involves responsibility for conducting safety and quality investigations in response to customer complaints or mandatory regulatory actions for products sold by our customer. The Compliance Associate will play an important role in ensuring that food products meet and exceed quality and safety standards for their customers.
Responsibilities:
- Maintain and ensure the proper functioning of our customer's preventive control plan in accordance with Canadian requirements.
- Work collaboratively with internal stakeholders such as buyers, legal and suppliers to support the new product acquisition process and perform regulatory evaluation of new items.
- Investigate quality and safety issues raised internally or by government agencies.
- Take and follow up on corrective actions as required. Investigate promptly and efficiently and ensure prompt resolution of issues with buyers and suppliers.
- Prepare investigation reports and provide corrective actions to CFIA as required.
- Act as a key member for food product recalls or withdrawals.
- Collect and review technical labels, evaluate packaging, product formulations and claim documents to ensure product labeling is in compliance with appropriate regulations, guidelines and internal standards.
- Evaluate samples as part of the food product control plan or, where appropriate, during product surveys, to ensure consistent product quality and to determine permanent standards of acceptability for existing products. Participate in technical visits to production sites and complete visit checklists.
Skills and qualifications :
- University degree, diploma or DEC in food science, nutrition, chemistry or similar field.
- Minimum of three (3) years progressive experience in food safety or quality assurance gained in the food retail sector or related production environments, with perishable products of multiple categories.
- Thorough knowledge and understanding of the Canadian Food and Drugs Act, the Canada Food Safety Act and the regulations adopted under these acts.
- In-depth knowledge of HACCP analysis and food safety requirements.
- Experience with product recalls and crisis management.
- Ability to research regulatory issues and make recommendations for resolution.
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to work in a fast-paced, high-volume environment and strong communication and interpersonal skills.
